The ancestral land of the
O'Fogartaigh in Ireland is around Castle
Fogarty,
Thurles (about 20 miles south-east of
Nenagh). The
sept of
O'Fogarty, in the kingdom of
Ormond (an ancient kingdom in the province of
Munster), was of sufficient importance to give
its name to a large territory, viz.
Eliogarty i.e. the southern part of
Eile or Ely in the barony of Co. Tipperary.
The name
Fogarty is
derived from the word
fogartach (
meaning exiled). The modern Irish word
fogartha means outlawed.
