The Fogarty

The ancestral land of the O'Fogartaigh in Ireland is around Castle Fogarty, Thurles (about 20 miles south-east of Nenagh). The sept of O'Fogarty, in the kingdom of Ormond (an ancient kingdom in the province of Munster), was of sufficient importance to give its name to a large territory, viz. Eliogarty i.e. the southern part of Eile or Ely in the barony of Co. Tipperary.

The name Fogarty is derived from the word fogartach (meaning exiled). The modern Irish word fogartha means outlawed.
